Auto sales surge in September, but GST base clouds the picture. Can stocks rebound ahead of Q2 results? (October 04, 2026)

🔹 Market Drag on Auto Stocks: Amid an eight-week loss streak on Dalal Street, major auto stocks registered notable declines, led by Bajaj Auto (-7.6%), Maruti Suzuki (-5%), Escorts Kubota (-5%), TVS Motor (-3%), Tata Motors (-2%), and Mahindra & Mahindra hitting 52-week lows.

🔹 Mixed September Segment Dispatches: Passenger vehicles surged 21.4% YoY to 4,63,081 units and Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles jumped 31%, whereas rural-facing segments slumped, with Mahindra & Mahindra tractor sales dropping 21% and Bajaj Auto domestic two-wheelers down 12%.

🔹 Distorted Base & Festive Timing: Headline growth in passenger vehicles is distorted by a low base from September 2025 (when GST rate cuts took effect late in the month), while the 2026 festive calendar is sp across October (Navratri/Dussehra) and November (Diwali).

🔹 Monsoon Deficit & Rural Stress: The weakest monsoon in over a decade (12.6% below normal) severely curtailed farm incomes and rural cash flow, hitting tractor purchases and agricultural input spending while increasing concerns over food inflation.

🔹 Q2 Margin Pressure & Channel Inventory: While Q2 revenues are expected to show volume-driven growth, elevated commodity prices (steel, aluminium, copper, rubber), freight costs, and currency depreciation risk squeezing margins, alongside high dealer inventory levels (~4.65 lakh units dispatched vs ~4 lakh units retail-registered).
